For older adults, health and happiness are deeply influenced by daily engagement: staying active, connected, and living with purpose. At The Abide, we believe that meaningful activities are not simply a way to pass the time. They are an essential part of maintaining mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing for older adults.
As an occupational therapy clinician and gerontologist, I have seen firsthand how the right kinds of activities, those that are truly meaningful to each individual, can positively impact the quality of life for older adults.
Engagement Is Essential to Whole-Person Health
Research continues to confirm what many caregivers have long observed: staying active and socially connected supports both mood and cognition.
A 2023 study published in Frontiers in Psychiatry found that social participation among older adults significantly reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The Alzheimer’s Association reports that regular physical activity can slow cognitive decline and may lower the risk of developing dementia.
The Journal of Aging and Physical Activity notes that older adults who participate in moderate exercise experience improved mobility, better sleep, and greater confidence in daily activities.
In other words, staying engaged is not just enjoyable, it’s protective. At The Abide, we see this every day as residents participate in meaningful activities that support wellbeing.
Lessons from the Blue Zones
We can also learn a great deal from the world’s Blue Zones, regions known for their unusually high numbers of healthy and active centenarians (people who live to be 100 years old). In these communities, people move naturally throughout their day, eat with intention, maintain close relationships, and stay connected to a sense of purpose.
While we may not all be aiming to live to 100, these principles remind us that the years we do have can be lived fully and meaningfully. At The Abide, we embrace the same ideas: daily movement, purposeful activity, strong social connection, and a lifestyle that nurtures both body and spirit.
We may not all live to 100, but we can choose to live each day with intention, purpose, and joy.
An Occupational Therapy Perspective on Meaningful Activity
As an occupational therapist, my work has always focused on helping people live life to the fullest through purposeful activity. These activities give structure, connection, and satisfaction to each day.
At The Abide, that philosophy guides everything we do. Activities are not chosen simply to fill time. They are designed to help residents maintain abilities and experience joy and purpose. For one resident, that might mean making coffee or doing a simple household repair. For another, it could be painting, dancing, or singing along to a favorite tune.
We meet each person where they are, adapting activities to their abilities and interests while preserving their sense of purpose and dignity. This person-centered approach honors each resident’s history, values, and preferences because meaningful activity looks different for everyone.
The Benefits of Movement and Connection
Physical and social engagement have far-reaching effects on health and wellbeing.
They help reduce anxiety and depression by boosting endorphins and creating a sense of belonging.
They support brain health by improving circulation and stimulating cognitive pathways.
They improve balance, strength, and coordination, which lowers the risk of falls.
They promote routine and predictability, which are especially beneficial for individuals living with dementia.
When movement and social interaction are woven into everyday life in ways that are fun and natural, they support both emotional and physical resilience.
A Look at Life at The Abide
Our daily activity calendar is designed to provide a balanced mix of movement, creativity, and connection.
Morning stretch or walking group to encourage gentle activity and conversation.
Midday arts, crafts, or music sessions to inspire creativity and self-expression.
Afternoon discussion groups, games, or intergenerational visits to foster community.
Evening relaxation routines such as aromatherapy or reading circles to promote calm and rest.
Every resident is encouraged to participate in ways that feel meaningful to them. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

What makes The Abide special is our belief that every person has something to contribute, no matter their age or ability. Whether helping prepare a meal, tending to flowers, or welcoming a visitor, our residents play active roles in the life of the home.
